How To Get Ungated in Health, Beauty and Grocery

*As this article becomes more and more outdated, an update on health, beauty, and grocery ungatings can be found here*

If you’ve read much of what I write here or on the Facebook group, you’ve probably seen me advise new sellers that getting approved in Health, Beauty, and Grocery is a key early step in the journey of a successful seller.  Here’s why:

  1. Easy to ungate and all three follow the identical process.
  2. Very important categories.  Health is a really large/popular category and all three are rich with replenishable items.  People who buy toothpaste, face cream, or Poptarts from Amazon often do so many times throughout the year.
  3. They are full of multi-pack opportunities.  When you sell multipacks, you only pay the Order Handling Fee and Pick and Pack Fee once, which means your costs are less per item.
  4. Adding these three categories alone will explode your sourcing potential.

Here’s How to get ungated:

  • Make sure your metrics are good (or non-existent!)
    • Order defect rate: < 1%
    • Pre-fulfillment cancel rate: < 2.5%
    • Late shipment rate: < 4%
  • Make sure you are registered for the Professional Seller Plan.  Anyone who is doing this remotely seriously needs to be on this plan anyway.  It pays for itself after 40 sales per month.  (If you’re unfamiliar with the distinction, check out Amazon’s explanation)
  • You are going to need to submit 3 images that contain receipts (or POs) from purchases within the last 3 month.  NOTE: Some Amazon representatives are now telling people the 3 receipts need to be from different stores.  Many people have gotten approved with 3 receipts from the same store, but this trend seems to be increasing.
  • These receipts need to be itemized (Some dollar store receipt that just has a bunch of prices won’t work).
  • These receipts need to have the store’s information (name/address/phone/etc).  All major retailers have this.
  • These receipts need to show a quantity of items that are not for personal use.  I always recommend people use quantity 10 for each item on each receipt.  I’ve heard of people being approved with 5 or even 3, but I’ve also heard of people being rejected for those amounts.  So, I suggest 10.  These can be very inexpensive items ($.25-$1), and in theory you could even return them after you use the receipt.  This does NOT need to be a large expense for you.  In fact, if you buy profitable items, you can sell them after you’re approved and make money in the process.
  • These receipts need to have the prices and your personal payment information blocked out (not required, but recommended by Amazon and you should follow their suggestions).
  • Each receipt should have ONE item in the category you’re trying to get approved in (verify it is in the correct category using the Amazon Seller App).
  • Pro Tip: You can use the same receipt for multiple applications.  So, the most efficient way to do this is to have 3 receipts that each have 1 item for health, beauty, and grocery, each with a quantity of 10.
  • Make the job as easy for the customer service rep as possible: I always write the ASIN for the corresponding item, so that they can quickly verify that this item is in the correct category.
  • The receipt needs to be an actual receipt.  An email version of what you bought does not suffice!
  • Some people suggest writing your information (name/address/phone/etc).  This is required info on a purchase order, but not a receipt.  I have never included this information for any of the people I’ve ungated (and have a 100% success rate), but you never know when an Amazon rep might go off script and want it.  It doesn’t hurt to add it.

Let’s look at an example receipt I used to get someone ungated a few months ago:

Health 2

  • This customer only needed health, but if they needed beauty and grocery, I would have items on this receipt for both of those.
  • This image is NOT ideal.  Notice how it is a bit blurry. Sometimes this will get you rejected.  Try to take good quality pictures or just scan them.
  • The store name, address, phone number are all clearly visible.
  • I have a quantity that is not for personal use.
  • I make notes to make their job as easy as possible.  It shows the category, the ASIN, and the quantity.
  • I have blacked out all other information.
  • I submitted two other receipts that look very similar to this.

Next, you need to be logged into your seller account and go to Amazon’s page listing categories that require approval.  Find the category that you want to apply for, click to view requirements, and then click to request approval. It’s suggested that you garner  the receipts before starting the application, because they will be necessary before you can complete the submission (Did you see how I secretly slipped my last name into that sentence?  I’m sure some guru would say it’s crucial for brand development!).

productreqs

Next you’ll get a few questions.  The first and third are important.

  1. Make sure that you check that you intend to sell new products.
  2. I always check 101-1000 products, but I don’t think this question matters at all.
  3. Your products need to have UPCs unless they are your own and you have registered them with Amazon.  99%+ people need to select ‘My products have UPCs.’

Next, you’ll need to upload the documents that we created.  Note: This should be 3 separate files, not all of your receipts crammed into one picture.  Select the top option (3 POs or receipts) and then select ‘I Agree’.  This will open up a section that allows you to upload your pictures and leave any notes (If you haven’t added the ASIN information to your picture, I strongly suggest adding it here).
After proceeding to the next screen, you’ll have to answer a few questions about you/your business and you’ll be ready to submit your application.

uploaddocs

I have anecdotal evidence that submitting at night makes the process go a bit smoother, but don’t let that stop you from applying. After you submit your application a file will be created in your case log.  You can find out whether you’ve been approved in this section.  Also, if there is a problem with your application, they will usually tell you what needs to be corrected (for example, if you used a blurry picture like I did, they may want to see another copy).

If you go through this process and run into any hurdles, please leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to help you through the process.  With some time, this process can be completed by anyone virtually free of cost! I strongly advise you to get approved in these categories.

As Always, Best Wishes

Mike

I’ve been sitting on a couple of receipts for a little while, but maybe now I’ll just go ahead and do it!

No. In fact, many time you can just let the cashier know you’d like to split it up into three transactions and do one right after the other. Good question!

I just went to start my process, and my Target receipt does NOT have the full address. I think that Target uses those barcodes at the top or something maybe. Do I have to go purchase elsewhere? I actually did grocery, health and beauty – 3 items – on this Target run. sigh….

If I remember right, Target uses City and Phone number at the top with the barcode. I know of people who have used their receipts without problem. If I were you, I’d just try to use them. Even if they reject you, I’d probably use the same receipts, apply again, and write in the address for them.

To get ungated, no. Those are all pretty important things to look at long term, so I don’t want to make it seem like they don’t matter, but they aren’t obstacles to getting approved to sell in these categories.

        Hello Mike,
yesterday I attempted to get ungated in the first of the 3 categories, beauty. I followed your suggestions regarding the receipts and filled out the online form as you outlined. This morning I received the following email from seller support:

“As part of your application to sell in the Beauty category, we require additional information. Please submit the required documentation from the following options:

Option #1: Three legible, scanned or clearly photographed vendor invoices or purchase orders for the products you intend to sell in the category. Please ensure the documentation submitted meets our requirements as outlined here:

        · Invoices must be dated within the last 90 days, or showing item delivery or purchase within the last 90 days

        · POs must have your name or issuing business name

        · POs must have contact information for your business (e.g. address, phone number, email or website)

        · POs must have the names of the products you purchased

        · POs must have document issuer’s name, address, phone number, email or website

        · Please obscure pricing information (optional)

Option #2: 1 -2 invoices meeting the requirements outlined above plus one of the following items:

        · Business website URL

        · Business address of your store/office

        · Business address of your manufacturing plant

        · Business certification showing that your business is registered (e.g. business license or sales/use tax license)

        · Home occupation permit (If you work out of your home)

Option #3: One item from List 1 and one item from List 2

        Acceptable Documents List 1

        · US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Certificate of Registration

        · US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notification

        · A product testing document or safety assessment from an independent laboratory or consulting company

        Acceptable Documents List 2

        · Business website URL

        · Business address of your store/office

        · Business address of your manufacturing plant

        · Business certification showing that your business is registered (e.g. business license or sales/use tax license)

        · Home occupation permit (If you work out of your home)

Please attach the required documentation to your email response (e.g., as a PDF file or an image file). We reserve the right to verify all submitted documentation including contacting any product vendors you identify in your application.

If you manufacture or own the brands for the products you intend to sell, as part of the application process, we ask that you submit business certification (e.g., your business license, sales/use tax license, or other registration document) and product testing and safety documentation (e.g., a report from an independent laboratory stating the ingredients in the product, or verifying the safety of the product) or your registration with the US Food and Drug Administration when applicable. We may request additional information on a case-by-case basis. Please note that MSDS (Material safety and data sheets) documents do not meet our requirements for product testing and safety documentation.”

Incidentally, I DID submit the required 3 receipts along with the category, ASIN number and quantity. I am incredibly disappointed as today I was going to try and get ungated in the grocery and health categories but I am unsure as to what to do next.
        Ann.

          Ann,

If you submitted 3 receipts dated within the last 30 days, you’re going to need to contact them and figure out what exactly they thought was wrong. This is just a form email that they send. It’s possible they thought your receipts were illegible. It’s possible the customer service rep is making up rules as he goes along. A lot of things are possible, but we can’t tell from just that email. I prefer to call to try to talk to a human and have them explain where there is an issue.
So, do some follow up and see what you can figure out.

Call them. Ask to speak to a supervisor and explain the problem. Tell them that you’ve applied and followed all of the rules and have simply received a form email. When you asked for clarification, they didn’t even bother to read the email and sent you the same form letter and you need to find out what the problem is. Just stay on the phone until you get an answer.

Well, now Amazon is saying that you cannot submit store receipts. They said the do not accept them. They need actual invoices. So, how are you going to get an invoice from Target?

Hey Mike – the suggestion to call – every time I have called they tell me they are not the right department, and the people who handle ungating “dont have phones” so I am stuck with emails. They tell me to reapply and now they dont even write anything – they just send me a form letter telling me Im not qualified to sell under Beauty. It has even less information than the other emails they originally sent. Now they just close the entire case and tell me to kick rocks. I have tried calling three times only to be told that they have no access to this information and can’t help me – that I must use email. Its unreal….

Wow. Was just going to buy my EAN numbers (I’m based in the UK) and put my application in to Amazon for the temporary tattoos I sell when I saw your rejection which included:
“If you manufacture or own the brands for the products you intend to sell we ask that you submit product testing and safety documentation (e.g., a report from an independent laboratory stating the ingredients in the product, or verifying the safety of the product) or your registration with the US Food and Drug Administration when applicable. That’s just saved me a some money and a load of time as these don’t exist for these products and the cost of doing them would far outweigh the profit.
          Thanks!

      Hey Tammie!
Following payment, you’ll be sent a confirmation email with a set of steps. These steps will walk you through adding our email to your account (you will give us access to case files only) where we will complete the application, submit the documentation, and deal with any correspondence from Amazon. We can’t guarantee what Amazon will do (they could completely close Grocery tonight), but we can guarantee you that you won’t be charged for any categories that you don’t get approved to sell in.
      Hope that helps.

    Mike,
If I want to list and sale private label items that I produce in the beauty category do I need to get ungated using those same products some how? Or does the ungating process not change regardless of what your going to sell?

I have read some stuff recently about Amazon wanting invoices not receipts for ungating beauty. Do you know anything about that?

Thanks so much for your time,
    Mike

      Mike,
As far as the ungating process goes, once you are in, you’re in, whether you use you have your own item that is Brand Registered or you use other items with UPCs. Now, your ability to sell a private label beauty product might have other factors to consider, but with respect to ungating, you can use any method available to you and the product you use to get ungated does not have to be a product you plan on selling.
Amazon still takes receipts as of 2 days ago, but different representatives enforce their own rules from time to time. As with anything on Amazon, your mileage may vary.

      Glen,
Those are the only three that we advertise right now because there are lots of other services that do the other categories. This isn’t our primary business. We just stepped in to fill a hole for people who desperately want help to get into these three categories. If you’re unable to find what you’re looking far at ungateit.com or ungateyouraccount.com or one of the other options, let us know and we’ll try to help you out.

Here is what I heard back for private label in Beauty in case anyone ever wonders.

“f you are the manufacture of your own products or you are the brand owner, then we need the following information from you:

        • Your company’s website within information about your brand.
        • Product testing documentation for the products you manufacture and intend to sell (e.g., a report from an independent laboratory stating the ingredients in the product, or stating the safety of the product), or your registration with the US Food and Drug Administration.
        • Your business certification showing that you registered your business (e.g., your business registration or sales/use tax license).
Attach these documents to your email response (e.g., as a PDF file or an image file).
Note: Please obscure all pricing information. Amazon do not accept online confirmation order. Also, please do not obscure the item quantity.
In most cases, we will respond to you within 24 hours after you send this information. “”

    Hi,
Thanks for this information – very useful as the items we will be selling are under the Beauty category. This is our first go with FBA 
The issue I have and can’t find an answer to is that the ‘sub category’ in beauty we look at is not listed within the FBA Seller account. We can only see 2 sub categories under Beauty – Bath and Shower and Fragrances. Going through amazon there are obviously heaps more sub-categories than that?
    Thanks

Glad to hear that we’re handling your ungating for you. I’m unsure if you’re trying to call us or call Amazon. We will take care of any correspondence with Amazon, so you don’t need to worry about that. I would like to signup for $99 u gating plan, but have a question.
I assuming you create the po (invoices, receipts needed for each category), will I have to pay for the items on the receipts?
I’ve tried getting undated in beauty about three different times, with denials each time. Two of the reasons I was denied were:
    1. the receipt had to have both my address and the company’s physical address on it. I’ve had a terrible time buying online, from a company that will have that info on their invoice.
    2. the other reason was the quantity of items, I wasn’t buying enough. So now I’m trying ulta for just beauty, and the costs are adding up. to top it off I don’t even know if both physical addresses will be on their invoice. I know I can return the items, but would rather not have to.

anyway I look forward to hearing back from you, I really want to get this rolling.
    Thanks,

      Hey Debbie,
The 99 fee covers everything (meaning you don’t have to pay for any items or anything like that), and that is for all 3categories. If you just need beauty, it would be less, of course. Whatever you’d like to do, we’re happy to get the ball rolling when you are.

Do you know of any cross border issues with the approval process? ie I live in Canada and source in Canada, but I ship my stuff to USA warehouses and use the USA FBA program. (Yes I pay through the nose on shipping)! But it works.

I have been reading online recently that the ungating process for grocery is much more difficult than it used to be and that just submitting receipts from costco, target and walmart won’t cut it anymore. Is that true?

I have seen Grocery applications accepted in the last week or two using only receipts. I do think that they are a little bit more strict now, but I have not seen it inhibit people from getting approved (although it may require going back and forth with them for a bit). If you go through with the application, please let us know if you run into any trouble.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Yesterday I submitted the documentation for ungating in health/personal care and grocery. The grocery application was very quickly denied and the health / personal care application is under review. The grocery denial email was generic and stated the reason to be something like “Unsaleable quantities.”

In all honesty, my grocery application was weak. I had read anecdotal stories that it was pretty easy to get ungated in most categories, but now that I’ve done more research I think I understand where I might have gone wrong. I will re-apply with a more thoughtful approach and see what happens.

    Mike,
I have decided to get your $99 ungating plan after several really frustrating attempts to discuss my case over the telephone with Seller Support; I live in Australia so I attempted to use their call back service but they haven’t called me despite telling me that they had. Anyway, when I go to your PayPal payment page, it tells me that it will cost me $297 even after I click the ‘update’ icon.

    Mike,

I’m about to use your “ungating” services but would like to know how long will it take to ungate all 3? Also, I’m a just launched seller and don’t have anything sold yet (I have a shipment on its way to amazon FBA), would that be any problem for ungating?

    Thanks

the shipment will not be a problem, and none of the things shipped will be in categories yet that you arent approved in, assuming of course you did everything correct. its hard to give an exact timeline, we will start the process immediately and then we just wait on amazon responses. usually within a week though things seem to be finished.

Hi, I’m confused about the ProTip in the second section titled here’s how to get ungated…it says “You can use the same receipt for multiple applications. So, the most efficient way to do this is to have 3 receipts that each have 1 item for health, beauty, and grocery, each with a quantity of 10.” So am I making three copies of the same receipt and blocking out one just to show health, one to show just beauty and one to show just grocery? Or am I buying 30 of each health, beauty, and grocery category if using three different receipts? Maybe I just need more coffee…thanks!!

      Each category requires 3 receipts.
So, let’s say you were doing all 3. My point is you don’t 9.
So, you can have 1 receipt that has a health item, a beauty item, and a grocery item.
Then a second receipt with a health item, a beauty item, and a grocery item.
Then a third receipt with a health item, a beauty item, and a grocery item.

Now, you can go get ungated in health using Receipt # 1, 2, and 3.
Then you can go get ungated in beauty using Receipt # 1, 2, and 3.
Then you can go get ungated in grocery using Receipt # 1, 2, and 3.

Thanks for getting back so quick…sorry still confused…going for all three so… on the first receipt I would have say 10 items in health, one in beauty, and one in grocery? Then the second receipt have 10 items in beauty, one in health and one in grocery. Then the third has 10 items in grocery, one in health and one in beauty. OR 10 items of health, 10 beauty, and 10 grocery on each of the three receipts? Thanks!

I would just like to comment that I recently applied for ungating in both grocery and Health and Personal Care. My grocery application was almost immediately denied. I had to read the email carefully, but the reason given was something like “unsaleable quantity.” I believe what they were trying to tell me is that I was denied because buying one bag of peanuts (which isn’t what I bought, but just for example) isnt going to get me ungated in grocery.

It seems like there is a lot of variation and a lot of it depends on the agent you get, so I’ll try again with higher quantities on my receipts and see what happens.

This is why I tell people to get 10 of each item. I’ve seen people approved with as few as 3, but it isn’t worth it to me. I’ve never had a problem with 10.

In situations like this, you can go one of two routes. One is to just let them close it and open another application. The other is to try to get a hold of a supervisor and ask them why customer service representatives are making up their own rules, rather than following the guidelines Amazon has laid out. I’m not sure which option is best, but in either case, persistence wins the day. I had 2 people today, in the Facebook group, say that they were approved with retail receipts, so I know this rule hasn’t changed in the past week or so since I did my last ungating.

Many thanks for all the info. Other, older posts, say that we should receive a call from Amazon within 24 hours and we should be ready to take the call. Is this still the case?

Also, if I apply for your service, and assign my email to you, what will happen to emails that Amazon may send me in the interim?

    Many thanks, Danny

      Danny,
How Amazon chooses to respond differs from agent to agent. Sometimes they call. Often they communicate using email. When we do ungatings, what happens is that everything stays the same on your end, but we have access to your case files. This allows us to handle any questions that Amazon might have. You will still get all of your regular Amazon emails.

I’m sorry. We’re not primarily an ungating company, we only stepped into this space because we believe these 3 are really important for new sellers and there weren’t a lot of options. As it turns out, DVD is a particularly difficult category to get approval in as Amazon is constantly changing their requirements and have strict rules on which invoices will be acceptable. I hope you find someone who can do the ungating, but you might need to be prepared to spend a considerable amount. Alternatively, it might be best to focus your sales in another direction.

I am working on getting ungated in these areas. I submitted 3 target receipts (it was only 4 items each because that’s what the deal I had limited me to) for the health category. I followed your steps, carefully. I did realize I forgot to include the ASIN, so I went back a day later and added a reply with it. It’s been almost 4 days now and they still haven’t approved me. Should I just reapply or wait it out?

If they haven’t responded, it is better to just wait. You should check your Case Log and make sure that it still says pending Amazon action. You can ask them to close it, but it makes a lot more sense to wait for them to reject you first. You never know when the rep will just approve you, even if you don’t have exactly what they want.

Is it possible that Amazon in fact changed the requirements for the approval in the beauty category with all the other big changes that happened on August 15?

Here are the current application requirements which I looked up on my seller account today:
Your application must include copies of three purchase orders or invoices dated within the last 90 days, for beauty products you intend to sell. If you do not have three invoices, we will request additional documentation to process your application.

They are talking about invoices or POs, not receipts. Maybe this is the reason why Ann was denied after August 15?

I also intend to approve for beauty in the next days and have 3 receipts already, but now I am worrying that this won’t help.

We have worked with international clients before. The service includes the three required purchase orders that will have Health and Personal Care items that will be accepted by Amazon. Additionally, it provides a step by step guide to the ungating, as well as answers to the few questions you will be asked. Finally, if any further communication is needed with Amazon, we will take care of that for you. So, 49 would be your final cost — no added purchases or anything else. We collect payment upfront, but we do provide a moneyback guarantee if any issues that should arise that would not allow us to complete your ungating (we have not yet had to pay out on this). If there are any other questions I can answer, please let me know.

I have a question pertaining to this. I plan to go out this weekend to purchase items to get ungated. When you add the ASIN, do you scan the document first to make it into a image and save it, then insert then image into MS Paint, add a text box, and type in the ASIN and quantity? If this is the process, what font do you use to blend it in with the rest of the receipt?

I just go off the phone with a rep and asked them were receipts acceptable or is it the approval rep’s preference and they gave me this vague answer that sometimes they are and sometimes they aren’t, I’ll just have to apply with them (the receipts) and see. Seems like it’s a shot in the dark with getting ungated based on the approval rep that you get!

That’s a remarkably honest answer from the phone support. It really is true. I’d go with 3 separate stores.
I do what you describe with paint, but I don’t try to blend it in … in fact I make it very obvious that it isn’t part of the receipt. I just want to help them match the receipt to their catalog … not try to fool them into thinking it is part of the receipt. I just use whatever the default is: Arial, maybe.

Hi guys, I followed the process meticulously and also received a canned response which appears below. Is it true that their policy has officially changed and I must go through a wholesaler now?

    Greetings from Amazon Seller Services,

Thank you for your interest in selling on Amazon.com.

I checked the documents that you have provided for Beauty category, and I would like to inform you that as part of your application to sell in Beauty category, we require additional information.

So I request you to go through the information that I have listed below and decide which documents you can possibly provide soonest, as part of your application to sell in the category, so that we will be able to proceed with the application further.

And for your information, we do not accept, packing slips, sales orders, invoices from an online retailer, or pro-forma invoices (Pro-forma invoices are invoices sent in advance of a shipment or delivery of goods. Lack of pricing or shipping information indicates a pro-forma invoice.)

We accept invoices, purchase orders, sales invoices, or commercial invoices.

    · Health Canada Certificate of Registration

    · Health Canada New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notification

    · A product testing document or safety assessment from an independent laboratory or consulting company

    Acceptable Documents List 2

    · Business website URL

    · Business address of your store/office

    · Business address of your manufacturing plant

    · Business certification showing that your business is registered (e.g. business license or sales/use tax license)

    · Home occupation permit (If you work out of your home)

Please attach the required documentation to your email response (e.g., as a PDF file or an image file). We reserve the right to verify all submitted documentation including contacting any product vendors you identify in your application.

We have seen more and more of this lately, but as far as I can tell the policy has not changed and I have seen people this very week be approved with retail receipts. There are only two real options:
      1) Get on the phone and get a supervisor and ask why their employees are just making up their own policies when the application process clearly says that receipts are allowed.
      2) Have them close the case and submit another application. Sometimes you just need to get the right person.

If all else fails, you can try sourcing from a wholesaler or use a service like ours, but obviously it would be better if you can get this done on your own for free. Best luck moving forward!

I’ve tried this 3 times. The 1st rep said my online pdf receipt (target) was not allowed. But my retail receipt to target was fine. They asked for my business license which I attached. Then a follow up rep said none of my receipts were good. I rinsed & repeated the process, adding ASINs, website & mentioning my business lic, posting late night… with no luck. Last night I submitted a 3rd time, this time with option #2 a kohls innvoive, a dollar store retail receipt &my business license. They said they accepted my business license but i needed to send 3 invoives. I’m so confused. I honestly don’t understand what they want from me.because it seems to be entirely different than what they want from you. Is it because its Q4? At this point I expect they expect my invoices are from a warehouse with zero retail influence. 😢

      1. Do not use online receipts. They reject these constantly. You should be able to do it with 3 different receipts from 3 stores (although I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen the dollar store). In your third example, it sounds like you only submitted two receipts, and a business license, which is why they would say that you need a third. If they are pressing for invoices, you can try contacting a supervisor and asking them why their representatives are making up their own rules when the application page very clearly says that receipts are allowed. It might help or it might not.

So, before you give up, make sure that you have an application where you have 3 different receipts from 3 different stores, each with a decent quantity of an item. Supply the ASINs, cross out the prices, etc.

Recently I submitted the receipts for approval and they replied with ” We accept invoices, purchase orders, sales invoices, or commercial invoices. We do not accept retail receipts, packing slips, sales orders, invoices from an online retailer, or pro-forma invoices (Pro-forma invoices are invoices sent in advance of a shipment or delivery of goods. Is this a hit or miss, depending who you get as amazon reps?

Yes. We have seen that happening more and more, but their page still says receipts are acceptable AND about half the reps are taking receipts. You can try talking to a supervisor and ask them why their reps are making up rules OR you can just close the application and resubmit it and get a different rep. I used to suggest the latter, but they’re taking so long to reply, that I might go the supervisor route now.

    • US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notification
    • A product testing document or safety assessment from an independent laboratory or consulting company

do you have any suggestions for “independent laboratory or consulting company” that can give me a safety assessment my soaps?
I have written the Stephenson soap company which manufactures the glycerin soap bases I use, asking for this information only to receive the MSDS reports which Amazon specifically does not accept. The safety assessment must be from an independent entity.

I have gone to the last resort which is to file with the FDA to register with them. But even that will take a week for them to reply to my request to register.

I really want to get ungated before the start of the holiday buying season, which basically means by the beginning of November.

Please FBA Masters, can you help?
    thanks so much,
    Marybeth

Amazon needs stamped invoice. How can we get it in case we buy online? I am not based in US.

How can I apply for ungatting in these three categories: beauty, health and grocery
What is the price for them?

    Hi,
I followed the instructions with three retail receipts from Walmart, Big Lots and Kmart. Same three receipts for all three categories. I got quickly approved in H&PC but have been rejected twice in beauty and grocery saying my “invoices provided by you do not meet the requirements for category approval” and the case is closed. Is there any possible negative repercussion to just re-submitting the same receipts in a new case over and over til you get an approval? Thanks!

That’s typical Amazon. The same receipts are approved in one and declined in the other! There’s no problem with submitting a new application, although sometimes they’ll just say, “See our previous correspondence for what you need to fix” even though they never told you what to fix!

That doesn’t sound good! Have you ever seen a response like that? Am I like banned from that category for some odd reason?

I can confirm that actual store receipts already still being accepted and provide the basis upon which to be ungated in grocery. It took 6 days but I got my approval notification today. I listed three separate store receipts, with three grocery items per receipt in quantities associated with bundle packs currently being sold on Amazon; either 6 or 10. I then took a sheet of paper, stuck the receipt in the upper left-hand corner and then on the remaining paper, listed the full Amazon item listing, verbatim, only the ASIN associated with the bundle packs I wanted to sell and the product UPC. As I mentioned earlier, it took 6 days for approval but with the products I purchased, spread across 3 receipts, I think I spent $60 max.

Howdy, thank you for all the awesoome content and info you share! I recently tried to get ungated in Beauty. I did 3 receipts/transactions at Walgreens. They rejected and said their decision is final (like Adam above me).
Do you know if this means FINAL? Can I reopen case (or will that reflect poorly on me)? Or try again after holidays? Thank you for all you do.

They’ve just recently started adding this to their denials. What I THINK That it means is that they don’t want you to reopen the case and try to get them to change their mind. I do believe, though, that you can submit another application.

Are you still having success ungating in health and personal care with store receipts? I just applied today, following your instructions, and have already received notice that it was declined.

I looked at a recent post on the seller support forum, and the individual responding to a similar situation said Amazon will not accept store receipts, only receipts from a valid wholesaler.

It is incredibly hit and miss right now, both with receipts and invoices. Amazon appears to be making up their own rules as they go and each representative is interpreting them differently. It’s quite frustrating.

You elected the first option, for us to keep trying. As we informed you at the time you selected this option, we cannot guarantee that it will work and is taking longer than previously.

      Hi Mariola,

FBA Master’s service is definitely not a scam. I think Amazon is making up the rules as they go along. I was frustrated with the ungating process also. But Chris, John and Mike were extremely understanding and helpful. They offered me all the options mentioned in their response and I chose to stop the process for now. I will most likely try to get ungated again after the holidays.

      Thanks,

    Hi Mariola,

I don’t think that it’s a scam, but I think they have bitten off more than they can chew. I paid $99 over a month ago and they did submit receipts after about a week, were denied, and quickly resubmitted and were denied again. They haven’t done anything for over 3 weeks since, although I did get one email from them. Still hoping that they at least try to get me ungated, but kind of losing faith at this point with the lack of responsiveness. Only thing that I can think of is that they have far overstretched themselves and are swamped now with black friday/cyber monday deals.

You should have received an email giving you a few options. Amazon changed their approval procedures and so we’ve been giving people the option to let us keep trying, take a full refund, or take credit for something else. If you have not received this email, please write to me at mike@fbamaster.com so I can take care of it.

I tried the three receipt technique. It was a definite no! I spoke to two different Customer service reps plus I searched the forums high and low. They are all saying the same thing (including the reps) you have to have invoices. I even got denied on invoices! They weren’t directly from the manufacturer. An online wholesaler got me denied! I even sent my state issued re-sellers certificate with the invoice. Which by the way is what the first Customer Service rep told me to do. Still got a no! I think some things at Amazon have recently changed regarding these requirements. Of course they don’t tell anyone that upfront though.

I have been trying to get ungated for 2 months. I have sent receipts several times w/o success. I have sent invoices from valid vendors that supply many sellers on amazon, and have been told in every case that amazon cannot verify the vendor’s address.. even though they accept shipments and ship back product recalls to this address, and the vendors have been at these addresses for years. I am a new FBA seller. I have been selling since mid November (50 items so far). I tried to get ungated in Personal Health, Beauty and Grocery. I submitted 3 invoices and answered the questions. Amazon thought about things for 2-3 days and then tells me “DECLINED WITHOUT REASON” for Beauty and Grocery. Health is still pending. Do I ask them to close the cases and then try again after waiting a day? Are you still doing the ungating service?

      Hi Laura,

It is frustrating and they’ve been declining a lot of people without reason lately. All I can suggest is to keep trying, because different reps will give acceptances when the very same application was rejected by another rep. No reason to close the pending Health case, since they still might accept it. But, after a rejection, no harm in reapplying the next day, or whenever convenient for you. And finally, no, we have suspended that service given the dramatic increase in unexplained denials Amazon is providing.

    Hi
We are based in the UK and sell on amazon.co.uk and amazon.de.
I have been trying ot get ungated for around 4 months.
I have sent invoices from one of our suppliers in the states it took 6 weeks to be declined as they couldnt identify the wholesaler.
Which is fair enough as they are a small makeup supplier.
So I went to Macro which in the UK is one of the biggest wholesalers, I got 3 invoices with 5 items on each costing me around 100 pound.
Straight away was rejected saying they could not find the vendors address!
How they cannot verify Macro is beyond me.
I am starting to give up all hope on ever becoming ungated. It is harder as we are in the UK we dont have the same stores.
I dont want to go to Costco pay the 60 pound a year membership along with the stock to be declined.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
    Thank you

You can’t find anyone to pay for this service anymore…they’re all on hold because no one is having any success with getting approvals lately. I’ve contacted 2 other ungating services about getting approval in the grocery category, and at this point, they will not even take your money because they know they can’t get you approved right now. One of them said that they have a “waiting list” until they can figure things out. Let’s hope this is only temporary and that the approval process eases up in Q1.

Honestly, this is really frustrating. I’ve been trying for over a month now to get ungated in grocery. I cannot believe that a known company like Amazon can treat prospective sellers in such an unprofessional manner. Today I was told the retail receipts I provided from a wholesaler cannot be accepted. Retail receipts from a wholesaler?? Are you kidding me?? They now want invoices, although when you’re creating the request, it is clearly stated you need to attach RECEIPTS.

If you provide them with a PO, they can’t verify the address. If you provide them with retail receipts, they tell you they don’t accept retail receipts. If you provide them with a tax license or a business registration, it is simply rejected with no reason given. If you provide them with receipts from a wholesaler/distributor, they tell you they don’t accept retail receipts from a wholesaler.

If they’re not accepting any new sellers in a particular category, they should just say so instead of giving their sellers the runaround.

This entire process with Amazon just seems like busy-work. I want to sell essential oils on amazon. Nothing else. These oils come directly from the company to me, with a packing slip. I have, in the past, sold books for several years, but I don’t anymore. So I saw that I could not sell oils without permission, so I started the process. On the first page it says clearly that if I’m approved, I would then need to upgrade my account to the professional seller. Fine. I was also applying for approval in the Health not beauty category. I’m told I need one invoice. I get them to call me and I understood the packing slip with all the same info would suffice, since the company doesn’t use invoices. And this company product is being sold elsewhere on Amazon, it is not just me. My first denial says I have to be a pro account. I respond with a screenshot that says I have to be a pro account before I can sell… but not before I get approval. Given that it could take a week or more to get approval, it would be dumb to upgrade, invest money in something I might not be able to use, but certainly not till I get approval. $40 a month… losing at least a week… that’s $10 for nothing. I get a second denial that says I need to be a pro account AND have 3 invoices. I’ve asked for a phone call since this is not what their site says and not what they said on the phone. Plus… why are essential oils in “beauty”… I had no interest in the beauty section. Oils should be in Health.

I wonder what they are trying to accomplish with this. Why is the packing slip which has ALL the same info, not accepted?

Although there are a lot of sellers selling essential oils on Amazon I think I remember this being a test program Amazon was running. It seems as though Amazon considers almost all essential oils hazmat items and Amazon hates FBAing hazmat items. There are a lot of shipping restrictions on essential oils and I dont think that Amazon wants anything to do with it any longer.

Unfortunately for you I think that you will find this out only after weeks of dealing with the approval people and none of them mentioning anything about it. Worse you might spend all this time and money getting approved and then when you go to list these items they will be flagged and removed by Amazon.

      Good luck,

It sounds like Amazon is just not accepting new sellers in the Grocery category, PERIOD.

I submitted 3 legitimate PO’s from suppliers, bought hundreds of dollars worth of inventory, waited 3 weeks so they could “verify the address” of one of the suppliers, and after 3 weeks received a message stating that I was denied, and this was a “final decision”. So that means I’ll NEVER be able to sell in Grocery?

I’m thinking maybe the only way to get into Grocery is to manufacture your own food products, or perhaps have an ecommerce store running.

    Hello everyone,

I posted here back in December about the fact that none of the ungating services were doing grocery anymore. Well, as of last night, I am officially ungated in the grocery category!!! This is the service that helped me: www(dot)itsbea(dot)com

I am in no way affiliated with her, nor did I ever speak to her…everything was done by email. Like all of the other ungating services, her grocery/beauty/H&PC service was down in January, but once it opened back up in February, I signed up for grocery right away. It took a month to get approved (in my case…it may be quicker in other cases) and it is more expensive now, but to me, it was worth the wait and the expense. Amazon can change the rules at any time, so for all any of us knows, grocery, beauty, and H&PC could be permanently gated tomorrow. You never know what Amazon is going to do, and I really (desperately!) wanted to get into grocery before something like that happened.

I have only used this service for grocery, but she also does beauty and H&PC. Having the opportunity to now sell groceries and gourmet foods has really breathed new life into my Amazon business. I hope this helps those of you still looking for answers 🙂

I have been trying to get approval to sell in Beauty and have been denied twice. Amazon states they do not accept receipts or packing slips even though it shows the quantity and item(s) purchased, my full name and address, the store website’s address, etc.

I see other Amazon sellers listing the exact same beauty products that I already have on hand — all new – – and I don’t believe there is a “wholesaler” for this brand of products that i am trying to sell.

Can you advise me please – other than store receipts, online order confirmation, packing slips, I do not have “invoices” – i purchase a variety of products by going into the stores and shopping or by shopping online. Thank you so much for your time!

Ok. I want to see if I understand this correctly. I want all three categories ungated. So I go to cvs and get 10 health items, 10 beauty items, and 10 grocery items. Then I go elsewhere [for the sake of my brain in this scenario] and do the exact same thing – and then a third place. so I will end up with a total of 90 items? This seems insane to me but I want to make sure I do it right. THank you

I am not living in USA but I will visit LA next week for a couple of days and I am planning do these ungating processes while being there. Thank you for your advice in advance.

Hi – Quick Question – So I can just buy an item from a store online, get an invoice, and that counts as what they are looking for? Does that make any sense at all? does it have to be the product your advertising that you buy?

You can use any product to get accepted into a category. Once accepted, you can sell anything in that category. However, no you cannot just buy items online and use invoices. Amazon now requires wholesale invoices for approval in these categories.

        Hi Mike,
I reside in Australia and will be selling on Amazon US. Does the wholesaler need to be from the USA & have a USA address etc? or can you purchase a product through AliExpress and use this associated invoice?

Well, I’ve seen people have much better luck with US suppliers (like ABdelievers) but technically other suppliers can work, but the person doing the approval will need to be able to read it and verify details, which can sometimes be difficult with foreign suppliers.

    Hi Mike,

Are you still offering the “ungating service” in health, beauty and grocery?. If yes, where’s the link to that offer?

    Hi Mike,

I thought I was done with these kinds of concerns but the battle is not over. I am a brand owner ( small business) i never heard of the term private label until i came to Amazon, but i guess that’s what you’d call it. it is my own company and brand with a line of products Ive been selling for years. 8 months ago I discovered Amazon as a platform to sell my products. ive been on FB learning a ton ever since . I somehow, luckily got ungated in beauty and health and personal care somehow 8 months ago. must have just gotten lucky. and have been selling well both my products and I’ve developed and learned RA/OA wholesale and have grown that business as well. well…. since both businesses are growing it was time to open a second account just for my brand registered products. this is important for both legal and accounting reasons. i was approved for the second account and opened it last week. the problem now is that I cannot get ungated on the new account. There is no one at Amazon who i an speak to. seller support seems to agree but they say they cant contact the ungating dept and neither can i other than the request form and they just seem to autodecline everything i submit. any pointers on this?

I have applied about 10 times to the beauty category with legitimate commercial invoices that qualify according to every single criteria they have specified but they reject it regardless. I manufacture skin care products and the receipts I provide our of the ingredients we use. This seems to confuse them. Also, I am registered with the FDA, have a business license, have an EIN and two commercial invoices. Every single time to make a different excuse. It is as if they do not want anyone to be added to the category at all. Is there someone I can call directly there? When I do a Phone request it’s just the general customer service they can’t do anything. The call center there is barricaded.

I have been rejected seven times and cannot get a straight answer from amazon why. I called the call center and talked to a rep. I fixed everything they told me to fix and was rejected again. I am trying to get approved in grocery with items bought straight from the manufacturer with UPC’s. I have the invoices and everything else they ask for yet I am still rejected with no real reason from them. It is a very frustrating process.

It can be from a merchant online but you have to use an actual invoice, not like an email receipt of purchase or anything.

I keep getting denied and i’m only getting answers such as:

    Greetings from Amazon Sellers support,

Thank you for your interest in selling in Health and Personal Care.

Unfortunately, you do not meet the criteria to list products in this category.

For more information on about what products you can sell on Amazon, search “Categories and Products Requiring Approval” in Seller Central Help.

This doesn’t necessarily reflect poorly on you or your seller account. We evaluated the information you provided and it did not pass our approval process.

We appreciate your understanding; be aware that our decision regarding this matter is final.

    Help.

I’ve been trying to get ungated for Health and Personal Care. I get the following response:

“I checked the documents that you have provided for Health and Personal Care category and I would like to inform you that we are unable to proceed with the given documents as given invoices are from online retailer/wholesaler which is not acceptable as per the Amazon guidelines.I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you regarding attachment of documents.”

My manufacturer is not an online retailer but I cant speak to an actual person to discuss this.

Any ideas how to trump this robotic system?

i HAVE BEEN TOLD A thousand times a sales receipt from a retailer (Big Lots, WalMArt, etc) is NOT an invoice//which is what Amazon wants. For instance, in my gym I by supplements and drinks from a distributor, when I pay they send me an invoice. THAT is what Amazon wants to see. How in the world does anyone get ungated using a big lots receipt?

They used to accept retail receipts. As you can see at the top of the article, this article is now out of date as Health, Beauty, and Grocery have all gone to invoices only. If you’re looking for a company that works, I’ve heard a lot of people say ABdelievers has worked for them.

Hi to all, Thanks a lot,
I was about to start and I ended Up here with this exciting (however disappointing) article and comments. But I need more help.

While I was reading the comments and became more disappointed, my brain started judging ideas (sorry for that).

The first question that comes to me is that “WHY do we want to just get approved before we know what we want to sell?”

If we don’t know what we are going to sell then what is the point of getting approved. we don’t do our research about products through our seller account, do we?

If we know what we want to sell and we are about negotiating or ordering, why we want to do the fake job?

If we look at our business as a long term business, why don’t we register it? Why don’t we protect our brand as well?

we are willing to pay to a third party a couple of hundreds to get us approved and wait to see if we are denied and when (Sorry Mr. Mike but that’s the truth). Or we are willing to try and become frustrated and lose the opportuniries waiting for us (without any products we can predict we will win).

I want to get a sample that cost me $x, then I’m gonna order MOQ to be shipped to my home and then I’ll send them to amazon, and I’ll give’m away to get reviews and etc that cost me $$$

    now the main question:

If we do the RIGHT WAY, I mean, knowing what we want to sell, from which supplier, what price, MOQ and etc. paying and buying 30 pieces and asking the supplier to ship it to us with 3 invoices and shipment information, plus asking for whatelse needed by Amazon (like FDA), Registering our business beforehand, Having a One page website, taking Photos of the products we have received and having done anything else that could be the reason for not getting Approved,

What is the chance of getting approved?
What is the chance of getting approved with the fake methods nowadays(that all of us have been struggling to get approved with them)?
If we den’t get approved and have 100 pieces in our living room, can we sell them on other platforms like EBAY?

I like giving lectures and I’d love to read your lectures as well.
    Thanks.

On March 4th I posted a testimonial here for the service that helped me get ungated in grocery. I haven’t checked back here since then, but was cleaning out my bookmarks today and noticed a post from April on March 19th:

“Hi Lyn, Thank you for your info on your ungated. But I try to find the web site you’ve written and I could not find it , I google www(dot)itsbea(dot)com and I can’t find ether. Can you please give the info again?”

I’m a bit late in replying here, but April is right. That is the correct website address, and it appears to be down permanently. There was also a FB page for the service that now no longer exists. Oddly enough, in going through my bookmarks, there were 2 other ungating services I had bookmarked in case I needed their services in the future for other categories. The websites for those 2 other services are gone as well! It seems that the days of these ungating services may be coming to an end. I wish everyone luck in their quest to get ungated.

I keep getting rejected saying they will not accept invoiced from discount stores or liquidators…,.which I haven’t purchased from. Has anyone recently within the month been approved in beauty and if so what wholesale company was used please for approval.

I’m currently trying with ABDelivers.com and so far they aren’t accepting any of my invoices. All I got from them is a generic email receipt with no order detail, so I thought maybe a screenshot of the detailed order from their website would suffice but they won’t take it. Are people emailing them and asking for a detailed invoice or what?

Amazon does not accept the email copy. Ab Delivery does send one with your order. Just scan it or photograph it and send it in. Under customer number in the top left of their invoice though mine said Retail.,Not sure if amazon will knock it for that or not.

Mike, My name is Tim. I have applied to be ungated. The product I show plainly says I have to get approval to sell a product such as this, but I keep getting a response that says my documentation is valid, but it’s not in the desired category. I sent them a screen shot that plainly says that it is. So what do you do in that case.

Hi Mike, thank you for sharing such an insightful post. I think my situation might be a bit more unique but let me explain and hopefully you can help me with my Tea business.

    1. First I buy bulk tea by the pound in large containers. 200lbs.
    2. It delivers to a packaging facility and breaks down into smaller 40gram sealed bags stamped with our logo UPC.
    3. From there it ships to FBA and ready to sell on Amazon.

For ungating in the Grocery section, I have been submitting the original bulk purchase reciept, mulitiple product images in their completed packaged retail ready form.

I keep getting declined by Amazon for various reasons about the invoice quanitty too small (beucase I had showing 10 units of 20lb tea packs but that is an enormous amount of tea), product description unlcear, and each time I corrected the specified deficiency I was met with a blanket decline, with no specific reason.

I’m not sure how to proceed from here. This is my own brand. Is that the issue perhaps? Am I only allowed to sell established tea brands like Lipton, Nabob, etc?

I look forward to your help.

    Thanks,
    Parm
